A presentation of the design and construction progress of the new 116,000 GSF Crocker Elementary School located at 200 Bigelow Rd, Fitchburg, the tour will include an overview of the building design issues followed by a building tour of the project under construction which is scheduled for a 2025 completion. The building was designed for 845 students in grades one through five. The architect's approach focuses on providing an equitable design that supports the academic and emotional needs of the students. The design also features biophilic design principles, providing building occupants with a strong connection to nature.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize emerging trends (i.e. biophilic design principles) in the design of elementary schools to provide safe and secure learning environments.
  • Identify opportunities to meet LEED requirements and provide energy efficient and sustainable schools, particularly how this project targets LEED Silver certification.
  • Identify site challenges and opportunities of design on a phased school site, particularly related to the steep slope, outdoor play areas, and building entrance sequence.
  • Plan for the logistical challenges of construction on an active school site to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and other occupants during the construction process
