Presentation by:

Kailash Viswanathan, CEM, LEED A.P, Director of Energy, Consigli Construction

Steven Burke. LEED & WELL Faculty, Director Of Sustainability, Consigli Construction

As designers, architects and engineers in the field, designing for climate change is critical today. This program will provide a basic understanding of HVAC systems, the importance of ventilation, trends in technologies, how smart buildings are important in designing buildings. The program will then cover more advanced design discussion related to decarbonization of buildings, what are larger campuses doing today to be fossil fuel free, why it is important to think about NZEB, firsts costs vs LCC and  why one should optimize buildings after they are built.

This will be a virtual event, links and additional details coming soon.

Learning Objectives

The first hour of the presentation will cover:

  • Some basic terminology used in the HVAC industry
  • Introduction to HVAC today – Air systems and water systems
  • Heating Systems – Talk about different generations of heating i.e. steam, high temp hot water, medium temp hot water, and low temp hot water
  • Ventilation – What is ventilation, how is it calculated today. How does ventilation affect productivity, health, and performance?
  • New technologies – Heat Pumps, geothermal heat pumps, ambient heating loops
  • Smart Buildings – Basics, what goes into it
  • Decarbonization basics – what does it mean, how is that impacting our decisions today in how we design buildings
The second hour of the presentation will cover:
  • Decarbonization – What it is, how are regulations changing, what should we be doing to support this
  • Dedicated Outside Air systems ( DOAS) Separating ventilation loads from internal loads
  • Geothermal Heat Pumps – What to be aware of.
  • New technologies – Heat Pumps, geothermal heat pumps, ambient heating loops
  • Air Source vs Water Source - Efficiency
  • Heating Systems – Talk about different generations of heating i.e steam, high temp hot water, medium temp hot water and low temp hot water
  • Net Zero Buildings – First cost vs Life cycle costs
  • Smart Buildings – Digital Planning for the future
  • Energy Optimization – post occupancy
